We Flit like a Bird that has Lost its Perch

So complex are we that we don’t even ourselves know,

Sometimes this and sometimes that line we tow!

We get swayed,

Tempers get frayed,

Sometimes we shine bright,

At others we cower in fright,

Sometimes our euphoria we can not contain,

At others we find our spirits so difficult to sustain!

Sometimes certain goals we so much cherish,

At others we want their very thought to perish!

Sometimes we love so madly,

At others we forsake that love though sadly,

Sometimes we proudly wear our ideals on our sleeve,

At others their demise we proclaim and grieve!

Sometimes we so divinely bear our cross,

At others we we get mired in muck and dross!

Sometimes to lofty heights we rise,

At others our pettiness we so much abhor and despise!

That is why we don’t know ourselves much.

Our wildly swinging contrariness is such

That from one confusion to another we lurch,

And flit like a bird that has not found its perch!

Have A Twinkle In Every Wrinkle

Have a twinkle in your wrinkle,

Defy age and let there be in your voice a tinkle!

Remember that age is just a number,

No need to give up and go meekly from dumb to dumber!

Even if the flesh is weak, keep your spirit soaring,

No need at all to make your life needlessly

dull and boring!

If your life is imbued with zest,

You will not be cowed down by age, the pest!

Why should your life of listlessness reek

When you have still to scale many a peak!

As you have yet way to go,

Don’t meekly yield to age, the foe!

Keep the banner of your enthusiasm flying high,

Where is the need to die everyday before you actually die!

You are as young as you think,

So why not at age just thumb your nose and playfully wink?

Believe that you are as young as you feel,

That is the best way with your sunset years to deal!

Have a twinkle in every wrinkle,

If at all, let your face in child-like wonderment crinkle!

Leave Behind A Rich Legacy

Leave behind a legacy of love

That no hate-monger can under the carpet shove!

Leave behind a legacy of affection

That always in the world will find traction!

Leave behind a legacy of caring

That everyone feels like sharing!

Leave behind a legacy of reason

Living without which is no less than treason!

Leave behind a legacy of perseverance

That is truly worthy of reverence!

Leave behind a legacy of good health

Than which there is no greater wealth!

Leave behind a legacy of feeling

Under the impact of the lack of which the whole world is reeling!

Leave behind a legacy of compassion

Out of which a kinder world the posterity can fashion!

Leave behind a legacy of detachment

That transcends every worldly attachment!

Leave behind a legacy of silence

That is an anti-dote to every possible violence!

Leave behind a legacy of laughter

Than which for a sinking person there can be no better rafter!

Leave behind a legacy of mental acuity

Which is the very anti-thesis of the prevailing mental vacuity!

Leave behind a legacy of sanity

That is far removed from all self-delusional vanity!

Leave behind a legacy of unity

That none can dismiss with impunity!

Leave behind a legacy rich in character and worth

Of which in the world there is such dearth!

As Vainglorious Narcissists It Makes Us All

Hooked on to our mobile phones,

We have become cases gone!

Who knew seductive technology with all its wooing

Will prove to be our undoing?

When I say it, I might sound terse,

But can there be an addiction worse?

While the hugely disruptive tech holds us in thrall,

And at each other we snap and snarl,

It holds us in its sway

While the last vestiges of our humanity ebb away!

As the social media ironically into anti-socials us turns,

And big holes in our conscience burns,

As vainglorious narcissists it makes us all,

We become puny and it stands menacingly tall!

While we tweet upon tweet,

We have all but lost our bonds sweet!

Engrossed in our virtual fantasies,

We have all but forgotten our all too human ecstasies!

While the unreal world inhabiting  our tiny handsets beguiles us into its snare,

Of the danger looming over our heads we are hardly aware!

There Was Like Him No Other

We have lost our dear brother,

There was like him no other!

One moment he was fine, the other he was no more,

That is why we feel so numb and sore!

He was a friend of friends,

Something which today hardly trends!

He was gentle to the core,

Can you ask for anything more?

He was generous to boot,

That is the point moot!

He was the apple of our eyes,

So strong with him were our ties!

With a great sense of humour was he blessed,

Always in his laughing clothes was he dressed!

Often in splits he would us all leave,

That is why we all the more grieve!

He was indeed a gentle soul,

That is why suffering on him took no heavy toll!

Gently he lived and gently did he go,

And gently, we are sure, his boat across the ocean of life will God row!

Dearest brother, always in our hearts you will live,

To have you back, all in the world we have we would readily give!

But that is not to be,

The writing on the wall we can all see!

But you will always be our precious part,

That is what we feel and know deep down in our heart!

Composed with great love and affection as a heartfelt tribute to a very dear childhood friend whom I lost a couple of days ago

Life is At Best An Enigma

Life is a flash in the pan,

What a mystery it is, man!

One moment you are here, the other you are gone,

And, as per our beliefs, a new mantle you don!

And so the journey of the soul goes on

While you reap exactly what you have sown!

Is this the truth or just a construct to make sense of what at the bottom of life lies,

For all we know, it might just be a game of dice!

May be our lives are governed by blind chance,

And we just to the tune of random forces dance!

And lest the randomness of it all frighten us,

We tend to believe in a greater design without much fuss!

Don’t all these eternal questions make life an enigma,

And lend it its ineffable mystique and charisma?

The Festival of Colours Tells Its Own Beautiful Story

The festival of colours tells its own beautiful story,

It bespeaks a tradition most hoary!

It is a token of happy times,

With a festive mood it perfectly rhymes!

The sinister darkness of ill-will should it dispel,

Towards heartfelt  amity and fellow-feeling should it us propel!

Let us hope it impels us to fill others’ lives with  colours of love too,

As there can be no better thing than this for us to do!

Let us pray that this vibrant festival strengthens the bonds of goodwill,

And our lives with mutual love and affection does fill!

Hope and pray that Lord Krishna and the gopis bless us to our lost humanity find

And our lives to the better and more amiable days of yore rewind!

Let us rediscover this Holi its lost essence,

And bless each other’s lives with our fragrant presence!

We All Have Our Rainbows To Chase

Take it as a challenge when you are in a spot,

Do whatever it takes to stem the rot!

The rainbow in the distance is yours for the taking,

Why an issue of your difficulties are you making?

How does it matter

If you do not get things on a platter?

No one in this world ever got it easy,

This is how life keeps you occupied and busy!

We all have our rainbows to chase,

We all have to sweat it out to find a way out of the maze,

Do it with all your heart if life makes you run,

We all have to work to find our place in the sun!

If you confront impediments head on,

In no time will they be gone!

This is how life tests your spirit and your mettle,

Every storm in life will subside if you give it time to settle!

Whenever trouble in your life does brew,

It is your patient understanding that will take you through!

Write My Name on the Shifting Sands

Stand with me like my shadow,

Be with me without much ado,

Encircle me like a protective waist-band,

When I am drowning, offer me your hand!

In this world filled with anger and hate,

Be my soulmate, be my soulmate!

When I am parched, fall gently upon me like the soothing rain,

Be my healing balm when I am in pain!

Be my mirror to show me, warts and all, what I am,

Serve me the naked truth and don’t give a damn!

Measure me against what I proclaim to be,

From my hypocrisy don’t let me flee!

Give me as good as you get from me,

But stand hand in hand with me on the pleasant lea!

When I am dead and gone, bury me with your own hands,

I will love it when you write and rewrite my name on the shifting sands!

You will see me beckoning from somewhere far away,

Setting eyes on you, my soul will light up and I will be aglow, I will be gay!

Alone We Come and Alone We Go

Alone we have to fight our battles inner,
Whosoever the winner!
Alone we have to our wars wage,
Even if there are others on the same page!
Alone we have to plod our weary way,
Whether while doing it we are sad or gay!
Alone we have to our formidable mountains scale,
Whether we move way ahead or behind trail!
Alone we have to our demons face,
Whether we do it grumpily or with grace!
Alone we have to through the maze of life our way make,
Alone we have to the blows along the way take!
Alone we have to grapple with the lurking dangers,
Since we are destined to be lone rangers!
Alone we come and alone we go,
Alone we the seeds of our happiness or unhappiness sow!
Alone we the happy or unhappy crop reap,
Alone we sink into the bottomless deep!
